John J. McNamara
After working in the private sector as an Engineer and Research Technician, John went into government to serve the public with a passion rarely visible in government today. He became State Representative for Oak Lawn residents and beyond and continued in that position for nine years. He compiled a record of service in local governments across the southwest suburbs. Specifically in Oak Lawn, John procured ,000 to help build the village's communication center in the new Public Works Center, along with assisting in the restoration of the Governor's cuts in village funding from the state.
Because of his work as State Representative, especially on issues related to education and the environment, John received the highest award from the Illinois State Superintendent of Schools for displaying a true commitment to quality education. He was one of few legislators to receive reconition from the Sierra Club, a nationally, respected, environmental, watchdog group.
Protecting ParksAs Commissioner and President of Oak Lawn's Park District, John procured state grants to build Centennial Walk and obstained millions of dollars in grant funding to purchase and renovate parks. The number of parks in Oak Lawn increased from 7 to 18 under McNamara's leadership, thus raising the property value and helping make the village into a premiere community. At the same time, John held the line on the park district's tax levy for six years.
Providing for FamiliesIn his work as state representative John developed legislation signed into law that today is recognized nationwide as the Missing Children's Law. He worked closely with Oak Lawn's VFW spearheaded by Jerry Harmon. Another piece of his legislation that became law was the Equitable Restrooms Act. Now, all new convention, sports, and public facilities must provide sufficient restroom facilities for men and women to ensure their public safety, health, and comfort.
Married with six children and nine grandchildren, John directed and taught a children's band -- "McNamara's Band"
Displaying Creativity
As Senior Research Technician for Continental Can Company, John invented the Pop Top Can End. (Patent#3404799) He also developed and installed computerized book storage units at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

This web site was started Nov. 2003 and debute was Jan. 1, 2004. Before it was a site I started when John was Committeeman. Then I converted it into a web site for "Citizens For John J. McNamara" and specializing in information that is useful to all of us. Our main purpose is to inform the people of issues & candidates on a continuing bases.
It's also is a way for John himself to live up to this
